Michoacan de Ocampo is one of 32 States that integrates the Mexican Republic. Located in the centre of the country, the State recorded high rates of inequality, an important indigenous population, mainly concentrated in rural areas, and a vast natural and cultural, tangible and intangible heritage.
Tourism is already one of the main economic sectors of the State and a great opportunity to induce sustainable and inclusive economic growth, with the ability of reducing poverty from the wealth distribution and ensure the future of next generations.
Promoted by the Secretary of Tourism of the State of Michoacán, an alliance is being created in favor of sustainable tourism, in which experts, entrepreneurs, sector workers, public officials and society are participating in a disinterested and collaborative way.
The result of this partnership is the formulation of the Michoacán Tourism Declaration. The Declaration integrates 20 commitments that express the will of the Michoacán efforts for a new model of sustainable tourism development. From the standpoint of the SDGs, those help in the fight against poverty, generates opportunities for all Michoacán population and promote economic growth and social development in the whole State.
Michoacan people recognize themselves as a tourist society that shares their joy and hospitality, their traditions and their heritage with each visitor, advancing towards a more open and inclusive society. The Declaration is inspired and based on 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. So the social and political commitment to the Michoacán Tourism Declaration represents the contribution to the achievement of the Agenda 2030.
