The Atlantic Forest Great Reserve is a voluntary multi-stakeholder collaboration that brings together public authorities, private sector actors, local communities, NGOs, and academic institutions to promote nature-based tourism in the largest remaining continuous stretch of the Atlantic Forest. The initiative spans over 3 million hectares of conserved natural landscapes across 60 municipalities in the states of São Paulo, Paraná, and Santa Catarina, Brazil. Recognized for its outstanding biodiversity, scenic beauty, and cultural heritage, the Great Reserve seeks to position itself as a leading national and international destination for nature-based tourism.
Grounded in the belief that environmental conservation is essential for planetary balance and the well-being of future generations, the initiative promotes responsible tourism as a strategic tool to drive inclusive economic development and enhance the quality of life of traditional and local communities. Its governance model is based on the Collective Impact approach, coordinating a network of more than 1,000 members and providing a powerful platform for large-scale biodiversity conservation. The global relevance of the Atlantic Forest as one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots underpins the mission and long-term vision of the Great Reserve.
The initiative has received significant national and international recognitions, including:
1. The 2023 Braztoa Prize for Sustainability, awarded by the Brazilian Association of Tour Operators for excellence in sustainable and socially responsible tourism;
